Crocker University isn't exactly known for its football program. But three hotshot freshman football players are about to turn that around, and in the process discover what it means to be a team, the challenges of adulthood, and the true meaning of love.

Erick West, the charismatic Texan quarterback, is the top recruit at Crocker when he meets Lowell Menacker, a handsome blond All-American tight end, and the two become fast friends. Completing the trio is receiver Dale Lennart, who feels Crocker is where he can finally be out and be himself--until he lands a spot on the football team.

Against a backdrop of rocky relationships, unexpected rivalries, and setbacks on and off the field, Erick, Lowell, and Dale form lasting bonds. When Crocker starts winning football games, Erick and Lowell's on-field connection leads to romance. But can the bonds of love and friendship survive the unexpected pressures of success and going pro?

There is no disputing that most m/m stories are written and read by women. Just look at the authors and the reviews. That's cool. Guys like to look at lesbian porno. That's cool, too. However, for some reason, many of the stories are a series of sexcapades with little other plot (or a weak one, at best). This one is different. There is a lot about football that would be cursory in most novels. Yet, most every character has a story. A good one. Starting with college football and ending up in the pros. I think this novel deserves to be considered by everyone interested in a good read. Hopefully, the author will write more in the same vein : a m/m story with a really good plot.

Safety Net edition by Keiko Kirin Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This was a weird book for me. I think I mostly liked it, but it was such a roller coster over such a very long period of time that I'm not sure how much I liked it. The book follows three college football players beginning in their freshman year and ending several years after graduation. The details of the football side were interesting and the author resists the temptation to make everything work out perfectly throughout. There were so many characters introduced at the beginning of the book that I wish I had a cheat sheet summarizing who they all were. To make it even more confusing, the author uses last names a lot to refer to characters as well as first names so I had trouble keeping everyone straight (so to speak). Eventually I figured out who was who, and spent a lot of time trying to guess who would end up with who. There was a lot of bed hopping and development of alternative sexualities in the book that it was sometimes hard to keep track. I was a bit disappointed by the ending, but after such a long read I shouldn't have been surprised by happily ever after (sort of). But it's a really engrossing book and I'm not at all sorry to have spent the time to read it.
WOW I know nothing about football , but this author kept me interested trough over 400 pages! I LOVED Eric and Lowell together. I also LOVED Dale this triangle could have been creepy and then add Candace, well kudos to Keiko for keeping it real! I read this book straight through in about 12 hours I really couldn't put it down. I must admit I also liked the first two thirds of the book best with them all together in college, but it is totally realistic that everyone had to go their separate ways once they graduated . The fact they came back together showed that it wasn't' just infatuation, but a lasting love and a lasting friendship! These boys really loved their football and this author even made me see why, something I would never have thought could happen. Great value for the money at 7288 locations.Highly recommended even if you know nothing about football!
I agree with livianni that this is a great book. More than reasonably priced for the content, it weaves a wonderful tale of not two but several main characters and their perspectives on life as gays in a traditionally homophobic arena. It is not just filled with gratuitous sex scenes, which seems to be the majority bread and butter of so many authors. After reading in the genre for many years, even though potentially tantalizing, that gets old very quickly (Sean Michael's books come to mind). I did not want the story to end (because it was so well written) but was left satisfied with the ending (many books in the genre leave you hanging for one reason or another). Too many books are coming out now that are pushing the envelope as far as pricing goes; after all, part of the "beauty" and draw of e-books is that they are cheaper than their paper cousins. I can understand increasing the price for an English book that has been translated into another language; however too many English language versions are way over priced, especially for the limited content. This book, however, bends in the opposite direction; I think they could have charged more. There's a lot of bang for the buck here.
I first read Safety Net in 2013 and loved it. I recently rediscovered it while culling my library and a "quick refresher" led to rereading the book, which was just as good the second time. Unlike many kindle bargains, Safety Net is exceptionally well written. The main characters, Erik, Lowell, and Dale are so richly drawn and likeable that it was easy to become emotionally invested in the story and their lives. The large cast of secondary characters - lovers, parents, teammates - are deftly written to add substance and emotion to the experience. There are very few missteps in creating an engrossing story, cast, and setting.

Many other reviewers have outlined the plot so I will just add that not only does Kirin use football as the "tie that binds", she skillfully uses it to shape our perceptions. Each character, in some way, is affected directly or indirectly by the game through their relationships. We follow Erik, Lowell, and Dale from age 18 entering their freshman year at Crocker University to their late 20s. Within the framework, Kirin writes a complicated but lovely love story. She examines friendships. She points the spotlight directly on intolerance in college and professional sports towards gay athletes. And she raises the question of falling in love regardless of gender - which annoyed another reviewer who argued you would know you were bi before reaching college. I am not sure that I agree, but it is a fascinating discussion after reading Safety Net.
